Jake’s Fund is a fund specifically set aside to pay for extraordinary veterinary costs for sick and injured shelter pets.

In 2011, a 10-year-old lab mix named Jake arrived at Roice-Hurst Humane Society after spending six months at a local boarding kennel, waiting for a family who never came back. When a routine test showed that Jake had an advanced case of heartworm, permanently damaging his heart, we feared that finding a home for a senior dog with a life-threatening condition might be an insurmountable challenge.
However, one of our wonderful volunteers, Linda Bailey, met Jake and heard his story. She vowed that Jake would spend the rest of his life at home with her, no matter the financial or emotional cost. Linda couldn’t have known that, instead of giving her boy a loving home for a few more years, she would only have him for a few more weeks.
Jake’s heart gave out at the end of November of 2011. He would never know how much his sweet face and inspiring story moved donors to give so generously and helped find great families for other pets who needed extra care.
Rather than asking for help from our community each and every time a sick or injured pet comes through our doors (which is often!), we decided to honor Jake’s memory by establishing Jake’s Fund, a fund specifically set aside to help with the costs of the next major surgery, rehabilitation, costly medication, or other critical need.
Jake, wherever you are over the Rainbow Bridge, know that we love you, we thank you, and you’re in our hearts forever. Your legacy has helped hundreds of pets with serious medical problems over the past decade.
Thank you for continuing Jake’s legacy by making a gift to Jake’s Fund.

Thank you for making a difference in the lives of pets and people in western Colorado who need it most!

Your support makes second chances possible for pets like Layla, a 2-year-old pit bull who landed safely at Roice-Hurst Humane Society after being hit by a car. Layla also suffered from obesity and hair loss across her entire body. Thanks to the generosity of this community, Layla underwent surgery to repair her injured hip and is now on medication to help her hair grow back and regulate her metabolism. Today, Layla is living a shelter dog’s dream with a doting family. Layla spends her days lounging in her cozy bed, going on gentle walks, and befriending the other pets in the home — and none of it would have been possible without the support of generous donors like you!
