May is National Pet Month
If you’re like us, every day is a day to celebrate pets. However, this month is a great reminder to spend a little extra time on the love and joy pets bring to our lives. Humans and animals have a long history together. In fact, studies have found that humans began to domesticate animals as early as 36,000 BCE. That gives us thousands of years of pet love to celebrate this month!
Whether you’re a pet parent or just have a strong love of animals, you can still join in the fun of National Pet Month. Are you ready to celebrate, but not sure where to start? Here are just a few ideas to get you going:
Volunteer or donate animal supplies. While we are practicing social distancing, you can still help by volunteering to clean up at dog parks or other areas that are used frequently by animals. You can also donate items or financially to your local animal shelter. Some items to consider donating are food, treats, toys, cat litter, and bedding.
Teach your pet a new trick. Both dogs and cats can learn tricks. Consider teaching your dog how to roll over or your cat to sit. Teaching them tricks is a fun way to keep their mind stimulated and strengthen your bond.
Adopt a shelter pet. What better way to celebrate National Pet Month than by giving a pet a furr-ever home? If you are considering adding a new animal, make sure you have done your research and understand the type of pet that will fit best with you and your family’s lifestyle.
Schedule a checkup. Love your pet? See your vet! Taking care of your pet’s health is a great way to show how much you love them. Preventative care can help your pet live a happier, healthier, longer life.
Exercise with your pet. In the US, over 50% of dogs and cats are overweight or obese. Getting regular exercise with your pet increases their cardiovascular health as well as promotes good mental health. Plus, the more time you spend with your pet, the stronger the bond!
No matter how you choose to celebrate National Pet Month, stop and give your best friend some extra love. Spend extra time with your furry-friend by giving them cuddles, belly rubs, chin scratches and bringing out their favorite toys. Your pet is your best friend for life, make the most of your time together!
